Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill escaped jail time on Friday when a Sydney judge sentenced him for his involvement in the supply of cocaine. The 54-year-old received an "intensive corrections order," which is a community-based sentence lasting one year and ten months, according to court documents. This order includes 495 hours of community service and mandates that he abstain from alcohol and drugs, with regular testing required.
Judge Nicole Noman stated that the former bowler played a "crucial role" in negotiations related to a cocaine deal, as reported by public broadcaster ABC. In March, MacGill was convicted of involvement in cocaine distribution. Authorities revealed that the retired leg-spinner connected his personal cocaine dealer with an associate in 2021.
The duo allegedly arranged a $200,000 drug deal between themselves, according to police. While MacGill was not directly involved in the transaction that followed, the jury convicted him of knowingly participating in the supply of a prohibited drug. MacGill represented Australia in 44 Test matches from 1998 to 2008.
