Sudan has been suspended from the African Union

The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) has suspended the Republic of Sudan's participation in all AU activities until a civilian-led Transitional Authority is effectively established. This step is seen as essential for Sudan to overcome its current crisis.
The PSC expressed its solidarity with the Sudanese people in their pursuit of a constitutional framework and institutions that would facilitate the country's democratic transformation. Additionally, the Council stated that if the Transitional Military Council does not transfer power to a civilian-led Transitional Authority, it will impose punitive measures on individuals and entities hindering this transition.
Sudan has been suspended from the African Union
The suspension of Sudan was prompted by the PSC's assessment of insufficient progress toward establishing a civilian-led Transitional Authority since its initial meeting after the coup d'état on April 11, 2019. The PSC condemned the violence that resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. It also urged the Chairperson of the AU Commission to collaborate closely with relevant stakeholders in Sudan, IGAD, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). The PSC requested that, within the framework of applicable AU instruments aimed at combating impunity, concrete proposals be made for investigating the deadly events that occurred on June 3, 2019, and that a report be submitted to the Council.
