Although Gylenhaal has publicly identified as Jewish, it is unclear whether she has raised her daughters in that faith.
Maggie Gyllenhaal's daughter, Ramona Sarsgaard, was reportedly arrested after taking part in a protest organized by Columbia University Apartheid Divest on Wednesday, which blocked access to the main library on campus. According to the New York Post, citing sources from the New York Police Department, the 18-year-old received a desk appearance ticket for criminal trespassing. Ramona, a freshman at Columbia, is the daughter of Gyllenhaal and her husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard.
The report states that she was reportedly among 80 students arrested during a pro-Palestinian demonstration that led to the closure of Butler Library during finals week. The university revealed that 65 of the arrested students have been suspended. These suspended students are prohibited from taking their final exams and from entering campus, except for accessing their dormitories.

Columbia University has prohibited 33 individuals from campus, including students from other colleges and alumni who participated in the protest. It is currently unknown whether Sarsgaard is among those suspended or banned. Sarsgaard maintains a private social media presence and has not publicly addressed the Israel-Hamas War, according to Page Six. Neither of her parents has commented on their daughter's arrest.
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have both been involved in films related to Israel. Sarsgaard's parents have engaged in various creative projects tied to Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Gyllenhaal, who identifies as Jewish, portrayed a British-Israeli billionaire in the series *The Honorable Woman*. The show follows her character, Nessa Stein, as she attempts to broker a peace resolution between Israel and Palestine through her family's fiber-optics company. Sarsgaard played former ABC president Roone Arledge in *September 5*, which depicts the abduction and murder of 11 Israelis during the 1972 Munich Olympics. In an interview with the Irish Times in February, he stated, “My position has always been that what was true in 1971 is still true today – about the Palestinians and the Israelis.”
He did mention, however, that to his knowledge, none of the cast or crew of the film identify as Zionists. It remains unclear whether the two raised their daughters in the Jewish faith.
