The Kuwait Towers have been officially included in the Arab Heritage List in the modern architecture category by the Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage Observatory. This announcement was made at the end of the Observatory's ninth regional forum, which took place in Beirut.
This esteemed recognition emphasizes the iconic status of the Kuwait Towers as a national landmark and a representation of modern Arab architectural creativity.
The Role of NCCAL in the Nomination Process
Engineer Mahmoud Al-Rabiah from the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) stated that the Kuwait Towers have been nominated as a cultural asset of the State of Kuwait. The Towers were notable as one of just two contemporary architectural entries included in the heritage list.
Distinct Blend of Function and Aesthetics
Al-Rabiah highlighted the significance of the Towers both symbolically and functionally. Initially created as water tanks, they go beyond practicality to become an impressive architectural landmark.
“They are more than mere water tanks; they embody a distinctive architectural statement, proudly showcasing Kuwait in the contemporary age,” Al-Rabiah stated.
The nomination was developed with assistance from NCCAL’s Restoration and Preservation Department, led by Secretary-General Dr. Muhammad Al-Jassar.
Assessment and Choice by Specialists
Engineer Mohammed Abu Saadi, the evaluation committee chair, mentioned that the Towers were chosen following an extensive assessment.
“The Towers fulfill a purpose and have evolved into a national icon, representing identity and a distinct feature of Kuwait,” he remarked.
Role of ALECSO and Regional Forum
The Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage Observatory functions under ALECSO, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization. The forum took place with the support of Lebanese Minister of Culture Ghassan Salameh, along with ALECSO Director General Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar in attendance.
This acknowledgment reinforces the Kuwait Towers’ status as a symbol of contemporary Arab architectural heritage, embodying Kuwait’s identity and vision for urban development.
