A Close Encounter with a Space Visitor—But Not Too Close NASA has confirmed that asteroid 2019 NW5 is set to pass by Earth on July 9. This space rock, measuring approximately 200 feet in width, is comparable in size to a small aeroplane. At its closest approach, it will be about 3.62 million kilometers away. While this distance may seem significant, it is considered a near pass in cosmic terms. The asteroid is moving at a swift speed of 36,900 miles per hour.
2019 NW5 is part of the Aten group of asteroids, which have orbits that frequently intersect with Earth's path. Although this asteroid is sizable, NASA assures that it poses no threat. For an object to be classified as hazardous, it must come within 7.4 million kilometers and have a minimum width of 85 metres. This asteroid does not meet either criterion, but scientists are still monitoring it closely. Even minor changes in its orbit could significantly impact its future trajectory.
ISRO is Focused on the Future
While the asteroid 2019 NW5 poses no immediate danger, space agencies are staying vigilant. India's space agency, ISRO, is already preparing for a significant event in 2029, when asteroid Apophis will make a close approach to Earth. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has emphasized the importance of planetary defence and plans to collaborate with NASA, ESA, and JAXA to monitor potential threats. Somanath warns that asteroid impacts could lead to widespread disasters. Additionally, ISRO is gearing up for missions aimed at landing on asteroids, which will aid scientists in understanding these threats and developing strategies to safeguard our planet.
As 2019 NW5 glides by without incident, it serves as a reminder to keep our gaze toward the sky. The universe may be immense, yet its travellers can still come remarkably close.
