The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a record revenue of Rs 9,741.7 crore for the 2023-24 financial year, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) being the main contributor at 59 percent of total earnings. The IPL brought in Rs 5,761 crore, while the board made an extra Rs 361 crore from non-IPL media rights, according to a report by Rediffusion.
Since its launch in 2007, the IPL has become a vital income source for the BCCI, creating opportunities for players across all levels of cricket, including the Ranji Trophy.
"BCCI in 2007 found a golden goose—the IPL, which is now fully integrated into the BCCI. The tournament is top-notch, and media rights keep increasing. IPL also provides a platform for Ranji Trophy players. As the IPL continues to grow, it will keep generating profits," stated Lloyd Mathias, business strategist and independent director, to The Hindu Business Line.

The board has broadened its revenue sources to include the Women's Premier League (WPL) and global rights, forming a strong financial base grounded in fan engagement and strategic collaborations. "The BCCI has great potential to monetize traditional formats like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, or CK Nayudu Trophy to boost non-IPL earnings. Additionally, the board holds nearly Rs 30,000 crore in reserves, generating about Rs 1,000 crore annually in interest alone. These revenues are not only sustainable but are expected to increase by 10–12 percent each year, driven by growing sponsorships, media deals, and matchday revenue," stated Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion. The BCCI's financial structure has shown success, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) heavily depending on BCCI's funding contributions.
The ICC relies heavily on the BCCI for most of its funding. "The ICC isn't generating revenue as it ought to," stated Ajimon Francis, Managing Director at Brand Finance India. Despite a short break during Operation Sindoor this year, the IPL's performance stayed steady, showcasing the league's strength. The BCCI's impact goes beyond local cricket, with international cricket boards expressing interest in partnerships. It's reported that the CEO of Lancashire County Cricket Club proposed that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) should provide the BCCI a minority share in the Hundred tournament to draw Indian male players.
