According to Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah, the US's recent decision to impose additional customs duties has given Jordan a competitive advantage in the American market.
Qudah noted that while Jordanian exports are subject to a 15 percent tariff, it is still much lower than the tariffs on other competing nations, enhancing the relative competitiveness of Jordanian products, as reported by Al Mamlaka TV.
In recent months, Jordan has been negotiating with Washington, successfully obtaining the lowest tariff increase among nations with free trade agreements or trade surpluses with the US, according to Qudah.
The minister highlighted that Jordan’s Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US played a vital role in securing this preferential treatment, with Jordan’s tariff rate capped at the lowest level, whereas other countries face tariffs between 15 to 40 percent.
Qudah also mentioned, "The new 15 percent tariff will be added on top of current duties. However, since Jordan previously had zero tariffs under the FTA, the full 15 percent now applies, which is still better than the combined tariffs that other countries deal with."
He added that this tariff disparity gives Jordanian exporters a distinct competitive edge across various sectors in the US market.
