Indian-origin Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani expressed his sorrow on Monday regarding the Midtown Manhattan office shooting while he is in Uganda. He stated he was "heartbroken" by the tragic event. In a post on X, Mamdani wrote, "I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown, and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts." He also expressed gratitude for the first responders on the scene. Mamdani is in Uganda for his wedding, taking place at a well-secured private estate in the affluent Buziga Hill area near Kampala.
A mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday night resulted in five fatalities, including a New York City police officer and the shooter, while a sixth person was critically injured. The alleged gunman, Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot, authorities reported. Mayor Eric Adams described the incident as a "senseless act of violence" and stated that officials are still trying to comprehend the motive. "We lost four lives to another act of senseless violence," Adams said at a late-night news conference, not including the shooter in the death count. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura had a "documented mental health history," but a clear motive has not yet been identified. "We are working to understand why he chose this specific location," she added.

The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a well-known high-rise home to major entities like Blackstone, the NFL, and the Irish Consulate. Surveillance video captured Tamura arriving in a black BMW parked double, exiting with an M-4-style rifle, and entering the building. Tisch reported that Tamura opened fire at the entrance, hitting a uniformed officer before targeting others inside. A woman attempting to escape was shot, followed by a security guard behind a desk and another man in the lobby. Tamura was equipped with a .223-caliber Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style assault rifle. Police later discovered a revolver, ammunition, and additional magazines in his car. The incident unfolded in a bustling area of Midtown Manhattan, just north of Grand Central Terminal and near St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Local news footage showed individuals evacuating the office building with their hands raised. The building on Park Avenue accommodates major companies including Blackstone and the Irish Consulate.
