The Union of the Comoros has reaffirmed its robust support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict at a recent regional seminar hosted by the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) in Dili, Timor-Leste. During the seminar, the Comoros’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ismail Chanfi, characterized Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan as a “serious, credible, and solid” foundation for achieving a political solution to the regional dispute.
He stated that the plan aligns with international law and has garnered significant international support as a practical and constructive solution. “An increasing number of UN member states are endorsing this initiative, demonstrating its strength and relevance,” Chanfi remarked. He further noted that the Autonomy Plan is part of the momentum generated by UN Security Council resolutions, particularly those advocating for a lasting, practical, and mutually agreed-upon political resolution to the Western Sahara issue.

Chanfi reaffirmed his country's strong commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the respect for the territorial integrity of member states and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. He urged for greater support for the UN Secretary-General's initiatives aimed at achieving a political solution based on Morocco's Autonomy Plan.
The diplomat praised Morocco for its active involvement in the political process facilitated by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura. He urged all parties in the dispute to engage in this "positive dynamic."
Additionally, Ambassador Chanfi lauded Morocco for its significant efforts to foster social and economic development in its southern provinces. He highlighted substantial investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and renewable energy as evidence of Morocco's genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of local residents.
He pointed out that the Western Sahara region has gained from initiatives introduced under the 2015 New Development Model for the Southern Provinces. According to him, these efforts have transformed the area into a genuine development center and have enhanced human development indicators.
Morocco's stance on Western Sahara is gaining international support, with significant nations such as the US, France, and, more recently, the UK affirming the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
