Diamonds and More: Botswana Prepares for African Mining Week 2025

0
As Botswana intensifies its efforts to increase diamond production and diversify into essential minerals, the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW)—Africa’s leading platform for mining investment, set for October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town—will showcase the country's changing mining landscape and investment prospects.
A major feature of the event will be a focused panel discussion titled “Botswana’s Diamond Legacy: Transforming Resources into Sustainable Growth and Global Leadership.” This session will examine how Botswana is enhancing its diamond value chain and creating new opportunities within its wider mineral sector.
As the leading diamond producer globally, Botswana is implementing strategic measures to capitalize on an anticipated recovery in the global diamond market. The country's economy is expected to grow by 3.3% in 2025, largely fueled by a resurgence in diamond demand. In February 2025, Botswana entered into a significant sales agreement with De Beers, increasing its share of diamond sales from 25% to 50% and extending their joint venture license until 2054, thereby securing long-term revenue from diamond mining.

In January 2025, Botswana maintained its momentum by extending two prospecting licenses for Botswana Diamonds. This extension allows the company to further its AI-driven exploration efforts and discover new diamond resources. Additionally, in November 2024, Botswana collaborated with the G7 to create a rough diamond export certification point, aimed at enhancing global trust and compliance while promoting transparency in the diamond trade. These significant developments will take the spotlight at AMW 2025, where Botswana’s mining leaders and project developers will engage with global investors and technical partners, fostering opportunities for deal-making and partnership formation.
Botswana is emerging as a key hub for critical minerals. In the past five years, the country has opened five new base metal mines and is actively seeking global partners for exploration and production. In April 2025, Canada’s Premium Resources initiated a six-month exploration campaign to identify new copper and nickel reserves at the Selebi North and Selebi Main projects. Meanwhile, Australia’s Lotus Resources is progressing with the Letlhakane Uranium Project, which confirmed its economic viability in March 2025, with plans to produce up to 3 million pounds of uranium annually. Mining giant BHP has expanded its presence by acquiring stakes in the Kitlanya East and West copper-nickel projects, demonstrating confidence in Botswana’s potential for critical minerals. Additionally, Botswana Diamonds announced new exploration targets for gold, copper, and platinum group metals in December 2024, utilizing AI-driven geological modeling.
In this context of growth and diversification, AMW 2025 presents a crucial opportunity for Botswana to connect with global capital providers and embark on its next phase of mineral-driven industrial development.
African Mining Week is a leading platform for discovering a wide range of mining opportunities throughout Africa.
