DRC and Liberia Join the UN Security Council, Prioritizing Peace and Justice

Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Latvia, and Liberia have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, with their term set to run from January 2026 to December 2027. Each candidate received strong backing, securing over 178 votes in a single round of balloting. While Latvia will be serving on the council for the first time, the other nations bring valuable prior experience.

The DRC’s foreign minister emphasized the country’s profound understanding of conflict, peacekeeping, and humanitarian issues, shaped by its own history. Liberia highlighted the importance of unity and a collective vision for global justice. Together, these new members aim to enhance peace initiatives and tackle ongoing global challenges with fresh insights and determination.
