Former federal Liberal MP Bridget Archer will be a candidate in the upcoming Tasmanian state election

Former federal Liberal MP Bridget Archer has declared her intention to seek preselection for the Bass electorate in Tasmania's upcoming state election. Archer, who lost her federal seat to Labour's Jess Teesdale in May, made the announcement today alongside Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff. This decision comes in the wake of political upheaval in Tasmania, following Premier Rockliff's defeat in a no-confidence vote initiated by Labour leader Dean Winter, with backing from the Greens. "I have spent the last few days absolutely appalled by the antics displayed by Dean Winter in the State Parliament," Archer stated.
"An entirely shameful exhibition of self-interest and a pursuit of power, lacking any viable alternative for Tasmania's future." Archer, who was formerly the mayor of George Town before transitioning to federal politics, expressed that she feels more driven than ever to re-enter the political scene.

“If we must hold an election due to Dean Winter's selfish actions, I am fully prepared to put myself forward for pre-selection to join Jeremy Rockliff’s team,” she stated.
Premier Rockliff expressed his support for Archer’s decision, calling her “experienced” and “a fighter” who recognizes “the importance of being part of Team Tasmania.”
He added, “The reason we are facing an election is that Dean Winter has allied with the Greens to disrupt the Tasmanian Parliament, even as Tasmania is thriving.”
In response, Labor Leader Dean Winter asserted that it is Jeremy Rockliff who is leading Tasmanians to an early election, not Labor.
"Jeremy Rockliff faces a crucial decision. He must heed the calls from Tasmania's business leaders urging him to step down. If he doesn't, he risks leading Tasmania into an unwanted and unnecessary election.
Tasmanians are opposed to the privatization of their assets; they seek a balanced budget and want the Spirit of Tasmania to return home.
He should act responsibly and resign.
An election is anticipated to be announced following the passage of emergency bills in parliament on Tuesday."
