Oman has inaugurated a pioneering facility designed to convert legacy copper mining waste, valued at OMR 41 million ($106.6 million), into pure copper through advanced, sustainable technologies. This significant initiative highlights Oman’s dedication to sustainable industrialisation and green economic diversification, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA).
The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Qais Mohammed Al Yousef, Oman’s Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, and was attended by various dignitaries and executives from both the public and private sectors.
The project aims to transform environmental challenges into economic opportunities by repurposing copper mining waste within production chains. This initiative aligns with the industrial strategy set forth in Oman Vision 2040. It underscores the government's commitment to increasing the value of local resources, promoting domestic industries based on natural resources, and enhancing the competitiveness of the industrial sector on both regional and global levels.
As outlined in the operational plans, production for Phase 1 is scheduled to begin this June. The initial annual output will be 60 tonnes of "green copper cathode," a metal produced through sustainable recycling. By December 2026, this capacity is projected to increase to 12,000 tonnes per year, further establishing Oman as a centre for green industries and sustainable mining.
