At least 11 individuals were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday (July 26, 2025), with six in critical condition, in what the sheriff described as a seemingly random act. Authorities stated a suspect was in custody.
“Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn't more,” Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea informed reporters.
Emergency vehicles and uniformed responders were spotted outside the store following the incident.
Tiffany DeFell, 36, who resides in Honor, approximately 25 miles from Traverse City, mentioned she was in the parking lot when chaos broke out around her.
“It was really scary. My sister and I were just freaking out,” she said. “This is something you see in movies. It's not what you expect to witness where you live.”
Munson Healthcare announced on social media that 11 people were being treated at the largest hospital in northern Michigan. Spokesperson Megan Brown stated that all were stabbing victims, with six in critical condition and five in serious condition late Saturday (July 26, 2025).
Mr. Shea stated that the weapon involved seemed to be a folding knife. Earlier that day, the Michigan State Police announced that the suspect had been apprehended. Mr. Shea mentioned that the suspect is thought to be a resident of Michigan but did not disclose additional information.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community affected by this horrific act of violence.”
Walmart issued a statement affirming its commitment to working closely with law enforcement during the investigation.
“Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those injured, and we appreciate the prompt action of first responders,” the statement read.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino noted in a social media update that officials from the bureau were responding to offer “any necessary support.”
Traverse City is a well-liked vacation destination on the shores of Lake Michigan, known for its cherry festival, wineries, and lighthouses, located about 40 kilometers east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
