A gold mine partially collapsed in eastern Sudan, resulting in the deaths of 11 miners, according to a statement from the state-run company overseeing the project. The incident occurred over the weekend at the Kersh al-Feel mine, located in the desert town of Houeid in the eastern Nile River province. Additionally, seven workers sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The company announced that it has halted excavation activities and reiterated its warning to informal miners against working at the site. While Sudan is a significant gold producer, mine collapses are frequent due to inadequate safety standards. In recent years, similar tragedies have occurred, including a collapse in 2023 that resulted in 14 fatalities and another in 2021 that claimed 38 lives.
